Compounding pharmacy is the long-standing process of mixing drugs by a pharmacist or physician to fit the unique needs of a patient. The origins of pharmacy began with compounding.

Rye Beach Pharmacy has a dedicated staff ran by Peter Perfito, RPh specifically for compounding. We have a state of the art compounding lab including but not limited to; Class 10,000 clean room, laminar flow hood, powder hood, capsule machines, ointment mills, electronic balances, and an unguator.  We know we create great products because testing is an important step that we incorporate on a regular basis.  Chemical testing means we send samples out to a laboratory that tests our medications for potency, efficacy and other scientic information.  Rye Beach Pharmacy is accredited by several pharmacy boards. We don’t just talk about our lab; we encourage both physicians and patients to visit our lab.

How can compounding be applied to you or your loved one?

The word compounding can be interchanged with customized.  The reason doctors write compound prescriptions is because they are made just for one person, You.  For example, you are allergic to the dyes used in a pill.  Your can obtain a doctor’s prescription for the necessary medicine to be compounded without the offending dye or chemical. 

Children are the most important people to a parent.  So, how can you give a 25lb child who has acid reflux the same dose you would give a full grown adult?  We work with your pediatrician to customize your child’s dose.

A topic that has been getting a lot of attention is HRT.  Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is the practice of supplementing or replacing hormones which your body is no longer producing.  This avenue has helped several women during menopause.  We have a pharmacist, Rosella Menta, who specializes in hormone replacement therapy. 

Our smallest family members, our pets, can also benefit from compounding.  Have you ever tried to give your cat a capsule?  It’s usually not a fun time.  Using our     transdermal (trans= through; dermal=skin) medication, you can rub it into your pet’s ears.  Besides transdermal, we can make flavored solutions, flavored treats and many more.

Allergies & Preservative Free:

Oral medications (tablets, capsules, suspensions, etc.) and topical medication (creams, ointments or patch) may contain ingredients or fillers that you may allergic to.  We create the necessary medication to treat your specific condition without the worry of allergies.

HRT:

We call them hormone replacement therapy because you are replacing homormones that your body is not producing properly.

Pediatrics:

Along with the earlier example of cutting a medication’s strength to fit a child, we also compound several other medications.  We prepare a local anesthetic used in minor surgical procedures, suturing, wound cleaning and administering injection. 

Also we can turn you child’s medication into liquid form.  This helps with children that don’t like taking tablets or have difficulty swallowing. Another benefit of having a liquid apposed to a tablet is if your doctor often changes dosage strengths, all you have to do is adjust the quantity.

Veterinary:

We work closely with veterinarians to help several animal problems.  Some of the compounds we create are for changing dosages and strengths, eliminating preservatives, compound combination drugs, change flavors, create unique dosage forms (creams, treats, etc.) and compound discontinued drugs.

Sports Medicine & Pain Management:

Today our compounding lab offers new therapies that can minimize tissue damage and ensure a rapid return to fitness.  Some formulations can be used before exercise or competition to ready the body for increased physical stress.  Other preparations can be applied shortly after injury to enhance healing.  Topical transdermals is one the most popular compounds.  Transdermals are applied to the affected area.  This gives you all the benefits of local treatment without the systemic side effects of the oral medication, which affects the whole body.  

Sports medicine today has a broad definition.  It’s not just about athletes anymore; it’s also about the average individual, the patient in rehabilitation and the weekend warrior.  For example, the gels and creams used to treat sports injuries can used by orthopedic patients, people undergoing physical therapy, individuals who have everyday aches and pains and arthritis sufferers.

While there are many specific diagnoses for which transdermal pain medication may be ideal, the following are some of the most common: a muscle & joint pain, localized or acute injury, and arthritis. Some common medications types in pain management compounds are adjunct pain relievers, anaesthetics, muscle relaxants, and NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).  Doctors customize these combinations of medications to create a unique medication for your unique situation. 

Urology:

There are several products we compound for urology.  We create compounds to treat kidney pain, urethral pain and impotence.  Some of the delivery methods we use are injection, creams and urethral suppositories.

Sterile:

Rye Beach Pharmacy compounds sterile medications in our Class 10,000 clean room and a  laminar flow hood in the clean room.  Every sterile compound is made by our supervising compound pharmacist.  In the clean room is where we compound sterile injections, IV admixtures, ophthalmic solutions and ointments.  We get our clean room inspected bi-annually.  Additionally, we send out sterile products for testing.  Here at Rye Beach Pharmacy we are devoted to giving our patients the best products backed by out unparallel service.
